Three dancers from Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal reflect on the influential company’s legacy and pioneering movement approach.Engaging with the celebrated dance company and its legacy, short film Tanz connects with three dancers from Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal, reflecting on the company’s influence and original approach to movement.
Tanz captures the distinctive artform that carries Tanztheater forward – through dancers Christopher Tandy, Tsai-Wei Tien and Lucieny Kaabral, and the evolving sense of movement they have established through the company.
“We felt a strong pull to develop this story and highlight the strength of what made Tanztheater’s dancers so special. Instead of finding inspiration from Pina's performances and previous work, we wanted this project to be a homage to the company and dancers that carry her legacy.”
Shaped by the idea of clothing and the art of dressing in relation to self-expression, Lara Angelil and Josephine Conen provided dancers with a foundational narrative they could explore through movement. Contemplating the initial connection to the company that led to their place within it, the dancers interpret the range of self-expression molded by Tanztheater’s approach, performing through their own visual language with their bodies as a device for communicating their stories.
