A Matter of Salt
is a video installation that looks at the ecological transformation along the River Werra in Germany, reshaped by more than a century of potassium salt extraction. Central to the work is the ecological concept of shifting baseline syndrome, describing the tendency of each generation to mistake the environment it inherits for the one that has always existed. Blending documentary footage with personal testimonies, the installation traces salinisation through lived sensory experience, proposing these acts of witnessing as a form of environmental evidence. The visually absent residues resurface as informational transmitters on a salt-encrusted billboard-like structure, onto which the video work is projected. The structure’s shape references the signage found throughout the region's extraction zone, redirecting its narrative of industrial prosperity towards the stories that resist the normalisation of ecological harm.
